Training Course for

Waterfowl Identification Test (WIT)

The aim of the Waterfowl Identification Test Training Course is to provide club members and other interested persons the opportunity to gain proficiency in waterfowl identification, with a view to sitting the Waterfowl Identification Test (WIT).

A WIT pass will allow successful participants to apply for game licences within the various participating states to hunt ducks.

In NSW, the Waterfowl Identification Test is administered by the New South Wales Parks and Wildlife Service. The test is based around the video "Ducks in Sight" produced by the Victorian Government, Department of Sustainability and Environment. The test comprises a series of 22 video clips (approximately 5 seconds duration each) depicting waterfowl in flight. The answers to the questions are in multiple choice format.

The training course provided by CICTC is designed to assist in preparing an individual to pass the WIT test and in doing so covers a number of areas including:
  • Key waterfowl identifiers;
  • WIT format and marking;
  • Game and non game species;
  • Individual species in detail;
  • Video and test paper tips; and
  • A series of trial tests.
Training is usually provided in two sessions of approximately 3 hours each on concurrent weekends. At the end of the second session, the WIT test is undertaken. The course is run on demand and requires a minimum of 10 people per course.

To register your interest, send your contact details to info@canberrainter.org.au.

Course fees are:
  • CICTC members $10.00
  • Non members $25.00
The Waterfowl Identification Test is run by the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service and costs around $30.00.
